Early on in the Dillinger investigation in April, 1934, gangster Eddie Green was shot by Bureau Agents and lay dying in a local hospital. His wife/paramour, Bessie Green, wouldn't talk until she was assured Eddie was dead. Once Eddie Green died, she opened up and spilled the beans about many of the co-conspirators of the Dillinger crowd. In this preliminary interview of intelligence provided by Bessie Green to the Bureau, she mentions the involvement of many such as, "Billie" Frechette, Pat Cherington, Opal Long, John Hamilton, Homer Van Meter, "Baby Face" Nelson, Doc Barker and more.
In this preliminary phone call between Hugh Clegg and Inspector Sam Cowley, it was evident the investigation would take on a magnitude not anticipated.
