John Paul Chase was with "Baby Face" Nelson during the shootout with FBI Inspector Sam Cowley and SA Herman Hollis, resulting in their deaths. Chase was indicted, tried and convicted of Cowley's murder. He was never tried for the Hollis murder as a result of "speedy trial" issues. As well known, the Director thought Cowley one of his elites.
In 1949, Chaplain Joe Clark of the Alcatraz Penitentiary visited Director Hoover and was apparently interested in the Chase matter. He wanted to know the Director's attitude in attempting to have Chase's sentence commuted to 25 years. Later Chaplain Clark would "go to bat" for "Machine Gun" Kelly's release.
Well, the visitation memo was sent to file but not before the Director left a lasting impression at the bottom relative to the Chaplain minding his own business and helping to turn "mad dogs" loose on society.
