As he laid dying in a hospital bed, Inspector Sam Cowley had a last moment conversation with SAC Purvis who had just arrived at the hospital. SA Herman Hollis was already dead, having been killed by Baby Face Nelson and John Paul Chase.

At Chase's trial, Purvis was summoned to testify to Cowley's words since the government wanted to use them as a "dying declaration."

A reporter who talked to Purvis, however, would tell a different story.

(Purvis would later be chastised by the Director for making himself a target of the press while at the hospital. It was after the Nelson shootout that events indicate the relationship of Purvis and the Director was in the advanced stages of deterioration; Purvis resigned in 1935.)

So did Cowley's final words reach the jury?
