While many in the early and mid '30s saw gangsters as the proverbial "Robin Hood," the efforts of the press and society in general by 1935 or so were geared toward teaching the youth of the country that simply, "crime doesn't pay." 

This particular cartoon seen here is but one of many of the day during this campaign.  This particular copy comes from the FBI's Dillinger file.

Notice the kids at the bottom and the various signs (influences) attempting to lead them down the "right path."
